Creating and Configuring Lesson Type Courses in the KnowledgeCity LMS

If you're looking to create your own courses in the LMS, follow this guide to learn how to create and configure lesson type courses that you can publish and assign to your learners.

Step 1: Accessing the Courses Page

  1. Begin by logging into your KnowledgeCity LMS dashboard.
  2. Click on the Courses option in the left-side panel of your LMS home screen.

Step 2: Creating a New Course

  1. To create a new lesson type course, locate the course ID field at the top left corner of the courses page and assign a unique Course ID to your course. This will help you identify the course easily in the future.
  2. Next, enter the course name in the designated field. For instance, "My Custom Course".
  3. Now, proceed to the course type dropdown menu and select the Lessons option.
  4. Choose your course's language from the language dropdown menu. In this tutorial, we're selecting English.

Step 3: Adding Course Details

Once you have configured these basic settings, click the blue Add button. You will be directed to the Course Details page where you can further customize your course.

Here are the customization options you can set:

  • Course Preview Image: Upload an image that will be shown as a preview of your course.
  • Instructor: Select an instructor from the dropdown menu or assign a user as the course organizer.
  • Skill Level: Choose the appropriate skill level for your course: Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced. Additional skill levels may also be present.
  • Languages: Add additional languages to your course or set a different default language.

Scroll down to modify your course name, include a tagline, a short description, and a full description that will be visible to students on the course page.

Step 4: Saving Your Course

Use the text editor to format your full description to your liking. After adding all the relevant details, don't forget to click the Save Changes button at the bottom left corner of the page to ensure all your edits are saved to the LMS. Confirm your changes by clicking the OK button.

Step 5: Adding Course Content

At the top of the Course Details page, you’ll notice different tabs. Click on the Course Content tab to start adding chapters and lessons to your course.

Adding Chapter:

  • Decide on a title for your first chapter and enter it into the Chapter Title field. For example, "Chapter One".
  • Click the Add button to include the new chapter in your course.

Adding Lesson:

  • Click on the link for the chapter you just created to manage its lessons.
  • Enter a title for the first lesson of this chapter.
  • Choose a lesson type from the lesson type dropdown menu. You can select options such as images, PDF documents, quizzes, videos, SCORM files, or use the Knowledge City Designer tool for interactive content with templates.
  • Alternatively, drag and drop media files such as JPEGs, GIFs, PDFs, or MP4 videos directly into the course to create lessons.

After specifying the lesson type and name, use the Add button to insert the new lesson into your chapter.

Step 6: Editing and Managing Lessons

Utilize the action column to show, edit, or remove lessons as needed. If using the Knowledge City Designer, access further customization for your lessons by clicking the edit lesson in designer option. Remember to save any changes you make.

Step 7: Configuring Certification Quiz and Other Settings

The Certification Quiz tab lets you manage the quiz settings that students must pass to earn their certification. Adjust the questions and configuration here as needed, if you choose to add a Certification Test to the course.

In the Configuration tab, you can set whether to issue certificates upon course completion, among other settings that can be adjusted here.

Supplemental course files can also be added to aid in the material of your new course. These files can be added separately from the lesson content.

Step 8: Publishing Your Course

Once your course is complete and saved, you may want to publish it using the Category Manager. This will display your course under the selected category on your portal homepage and within the learning library.
